Finding space to store things around the house is not a foreign concept to most. The trick is trying to incorporate storage solutions that are still aesthetically pleasing and that fits into your running interior design style for the room. Display cabinets are great for providing storage but more than that they also afford you the opportunity to get creative through styling choices. Here are some of our favourite ways to style display cabinets.

How to Style a Display Cabinet

Colour Selections

A good starting point is to choose your foundation colours and then build on the design style from there. We’d suggest that you start with three colours that you will then use through your styling choices and decor pieces. Using these colours you can then weave the accent colour through the shelving.

Creating Contrast

Once you have your colour palette sorted, it becomes easier to play with tones and textures. Try to veer away from using decor pieces that are the same colour as the cabinetry. For instance, if you have a black cabinet, avoid styling it with black decor items as they simply get lost in the cabinetry.

Another way to add contrast is through the use of different surface textures like glass, stoneware, wicker, and wood. They each play a part in creating texture and colour to your display cabinet. Mix up the textures next to each other for added contrast.

Playing with Proportions

Bring the composition to life by including items that vary in height and scale. For example, larger scale pieces that nearly fill an entire section can be paired with smaller items – these smaller items usually do well when grouped together and placed on a tray. If you have items that are all the same size, such as glasses, stack them up but at different heights. Other ways to create height are with trays propped up, tall pitchers,  vases or objects that stack well together – such as bowls, plates, and platters.

Layering

Create depth and visual intrigue to your styling through layering. Creating layers will add depth and interest to your styling. You can achieve this several ways. One technique is to layer an item partially in front of another. By overlapping pieces, your styling will appear more visually appealing than having them displayed side by side. Other ways to incorporate layers; with a stack of bowls or platters, a pile of linen napkins, a platter propped in the background, or by setting objects on a tray or in a basket. Keep in mind, you’re trying to create dimension.

Personal Touches

Even though styling is technically a skill, it is still your home! Add items that are sentimental to you or spark joy every time you see it. It could even be a quirky collection you have- whatever it is, having that personal touch makes the entire design more authentic.
