Tackling Trends

We are spending more and more time in our kitchens, so this hard- working room must continue to transform and adapt to meet our ongoing needs.

Spotlight Joinery has chosen to break down the top three kitchen trends that we are seeing so often in our kitchen designs.  Whether you prefer the look of a classic or modern kitchen, these kitchen trends can be implemented to ensure a timeless and sophisticated feel in the heart of your home.

Indoor to Outdoor Living

Together with the popularity of open-plan living, kitchen islands remain a firm favourite and create a functional and practical space – ideal for cooking, eating and socializing. Remember while designing your kitchen lay-out to make sure you plan your free-flowing spaces carefully, especially when it comes to the prep side versus the living area of your kitchen.

Being blessed with fantastic weather, and of course an enduring love of a good South African braai, a high-end kitchen that flows from indoor to outdoor living remains high on the agenda for most of us. This gives the benefit of easy entertaining while being able to prepare and serve food within a well-structured and free-flowing space.

From Light High-Gloss to Dark Matt

Matt kitchen cabinetry is on-trend in today’s kitchens – the muted finish adds a magnificent tactile texture. The matt finish also absorbs light instead of reflecting it on the surface, so often appears to have a cleaner look than gloss surfaces. When combined with different timber elements, this combination adds an ultra-chic look to a modern or contemporary kitchen scheme.

Natural woods are proving popular again. A more eco-aware trend is reflecting in our homes, with raw wood being an obvious option. Adding cabinets with a textured wood grain work in symmetry with a blonde wood worktop and together give a wonderful contrast to the matt black look.

Open Shelving

A trend which is becoming increasingly popular in kitchens is open shelving. Not only does this give one a feeling of openness and space but the practical elements are very appealing too.  Open shelving in kitchens also gives you an opportunity to showcase beautiful crockery and adds another dimension to the décor of your home, with a personal touch.

Kitchens need to be as aesthetic as it is functional – open kitchen shelves make a big difference in this regard. Open shelving gives you ample storage space even while turning it into a chic and elegant display unit.
